Do You Have What it Takes To Work in a Call Centre?

Working in a call centre might seem like an easy job at first glance. It's just about answering phones, right? Wrong. There are many different jobs in call centres. There are Customer Service Reps (CSRs), Technical Service Reps (TSRs), Supervisors, Managers, and Human Resources staff, and many others who work to ensure a call centre, the customer's first line of contact with a company, works as a well-oiled machine.
So what does it take to work in a call centre? Though for this article we'll focus on CSRs, many of these skills are critical in other call centre jobs too.

Ability To Work in a Fast-Paced Environment:
In a call centre, it's all about speed. If you are working in an inbound call centre (meaning call come in to your call centre, as opposed to CSRs making calls) the main focus is how fast can a rep answer a phone. How quickly can they solve a customer's issue? Call times and wait times are how a centre calculates its efficiency, and therefore, it's costs and profits. But call times and wait times aren't just important for the company, they are also important to the customer. That's why it's critical to be able to work under pressure. 

Accuracy and Attention to Detail:
The customer is calling you because they have a problem. You must be able to answer their inquiry quickly and correctly so their faith and trust in your company is upheld. It's important to the company you work for that their customers aren't frustrated. These customers are the backbone of your company, and they need to have faith that their call is being handled professionally and correctly and that they will get the same correct answer if they call next time. Accurate consistency is critical. And for that, you need to be the type of person who can learn and retain information.

Ability to Learn New Skills:
Products and services change constantly. And though the basics will remain the same, you need to be on top of new things. The last thing a customer wants to do is be calling you for answers and you don't know what they're talking about. You also have to be willing to learn computer programs or software unique to your call centre. Call centres have a lot of processes and you must be able to learn how those work so you can work more efficiently, and better serve customers.
Learning new skills such as another language can also help your job prospects in a call centre. Many list the ability to speak a second language as an asset.

Ability to Deal with Difficult People:
More often than not, customers will call because they have a problem and they want you to fix it right away. If you cannot show empathy, and support them in their frustrations, they will get increasingly upset. You must be able to deal with difficult people and know how to handle and diffuse them. Consider taking a course on the subject. You'll learn how to improve your listening skills, and learn little tricks as simple as repeating back what you hear from your customer. This helps them feel listened to, understood, and in the end, it helps them feel better. The more ability you have in dealing with difficult people, the better you will feel also.

Flexibility:
Though a call centre can be a great 9-5 job, most of them require you to work some shift work. And this or may not fit your schedule. When you decide to apply for a job at a call centre, make sure you know what you are able to do in terms of shift work. If you have dependents, you will need to make alternate care arrangements. Remember too that changing shifts can affect your sleep patterns and your activities outside work hours.
The nature of call centres can also mean that you can be called in at the last minute. You might also be sent home if there is not enough work. If this is a concern for you, ask how often this happens when you are considering a job in a call centre.
Working in a call centre as a CSR can be a satifying job. Often, opportunities to move up to a team leader or scheduler can be had with the work experience you gain starting at the bottom. If you have the right skills and the desire to improve them, a career as a CSR might well be worth investigating.

A job vacancy is when a position for a job has opened and needs to be filled. These positions can be opened by companies and businesses that are look for new staff or hires to help produce more outgoing work. When a company is looking for a new hire they usually put up an advertisement that states, Position Vacant, in a newspaper, classifieds, magazines, internet and so forth. These advertisements about job vacancies let people who are looking for work have a chance to assess whether they are qualified enough for the job.
Usually a job vacancy advertisement will have information on what the job is, what skills the employer requires from a would be employee and contact details. The vacancy will sometimes be published for a few weeks in a row if the position has not been filled within the first week.
When a person is looking to pursue a particular vacant position they are usually call in to meet with the manager of the respected company for an interview. The interview will consist of questions the employer will ask that the person will have to answer to be eligible for the job. Interviewing a person is how companies decide on whether a certain person is qualified enough for the position
On making arrangements for an interview a person may be asked to bring their resume to verify their skills qualifications in the business they are looking to be a part of. The employer will look over the persons resume and will decide whether or not they fit the job description.
If a person does not get the job that they apply for they should not give up as there are always job vacancies around that are opening daily. If a person keeps an eye on the job listings on a weekly basis then they should be able to find a job in no time at all.

Keyword Strategy for Your Business Website

Keywords shouldn't always be what you think they should be. I know a company that sold stain repellent for furniture, they thought their keyword should be "Furniture Protection". That isn't a keyword, it's a slogan. If someone is walking by your storefront and they see that in the window then they'll know what you're about but if someone is on the internet using a search engine they're never going to find you that way. There are a number of keyword research services, both free and subscription based (such as Wordtracker) that will give you estimates of how many people are typing what words into search engines on an average day.
Once you can develop a list of keywords that are relevant to your business that people are actually spontaneously typing into search engines on their own, these keywords should be broken down into tiers. The keywords with the most hits should probably match up with your homepage, the keywords that are about 5-20 less popular may or may not warrant some sub-pages and then smaller keywords should be classified tier-3 and set aside for the time being. Any one page should be optimized for no more than 3 keyword phrases, optimally. The more keywords you try to optimize for, the harder it will be to get ranked well for any single one of them.
As mentioned, you only want to have at most 3 keyword phrases per page. That includes your homepage. It's not always the case, but often you will want the top 3 most typed keyword phrases to be the ones you optimize your homepage for. If there are more than 3 that are all around the same number of searches then you have a decision to make. Often a few of them might be directed at a subcategory of your business, so you might have one sub-page that will be far more popular than the other sub-pages. The other option is a second website. If it's just four (or... err... five) you CAN try to optimize your homepage for all of them, but that should be a last resort decision.
The 2nd tier keywords, as you may have already figured out, should be designated to sub-pages of your site. In this case, we're usually talking about pages that are linked to directly off your homepage. If not, make sure you have a good solid reason. You might even want to link to those sub-pages from your homepage using link text that contains one (or possibly two, depending on how natural it looks) of the keywords you're optimizing for. These links tell the search engines what's at the other end has something to do with the link text used, therefore giving the page relevance for the intended keyword.
Your 3rd tier of keywords won't go to waste, but usually you want these on pages that are two clicks off your homepage (in other words, linked directly from a tier-2 page). Just like the other pages you want the keywords in the HTML TITLE tag and used on the page at least once (and definitely not excessively) but that's pretty much all your need to do. The other keywords will likely need some help -- links from other websites, the obtaining of which will be covered in a later article -- but 3rd tier keywords are usually typed infrequently enough that there isn't much competition to rank highly for them.
If you do get a couple of good inbound links with your keywords to some of these pages, you will likely rank them far easier than the other pages of your site. Just be careful how much time you spend on them though because they are by definition low-volume keywords. Collectively they can bring in a ton of website traffic but individually they won't bring much.

For Women, Science Careers Offer Intellectual Freedom and Flexibility

I once spent a day shadowing a research scientist and came away with the sense that she saw her work as fun. She taught me that researchers are passionate about their careers. Yet most young girls see science as boring, or work that's too hard to pursue, or devoid of any relevance to their lives. How do you help them to continue the innate love of science and discovery that's in all of us?
When you see the best science being done, it has elements of exploration, fun, and personal involvement; it's about enjoying the challenge. You also satisfy the question of how nature works. It's extremely interesting and endlessly captivating. Scientists often complain that we spend a great deal of time securing grants and funding to do our research, but we've all chosen to do this. There's a degree of autonomy in a research setting, and we forget to convey that it's an extremely rewarding aspect.
Science in academic settings or research institutes is different from trying to solve a problem with a particular end in mind. In a corporate setting, the focus is on problem solving or grappling with questions. The science which isn't goal oriented is very impressive because you have such freedom of choice - Choice in what we do is a huge determinant as to whether or not we enjoy this.
That's something we don't convey to girls - that science can offer intellectual freedom, which is a wonderful thing - and to have access to this type of career is extraordinary.
Why is science seen as boring? Perhaps it's because the teaching of it happens in a very fact-based way. To teach well you have to not only teach the concepts but teach that science is a process of thinking. When science is taught in a problem-solving way, then boys and girls don't get turned off.
Kids pick up completely on what their teachers are thinking. Teachers are so incredibly important and we undervalue them. We must change that, and politically advocate for teachers. I recognize that teachers have a tough life; they're overburdened, and we need to re-examine how we compensate teachers. We should make it one of the top paying jobs and then people would flock to it.
When I was a child, I had a chemistry teacher who came into my school relatively young. She enjoyed what she did and made chemistry so much fun. Because we enjoyed her teaching us, she thrived in her work. It matters to teachers that they feel valued and liked. It's important to understand that how people learn is realistically influenced by the interaction of teachers and students.
In the biological sciences you've observed that women are getting advanced degrees and doing postdoctoral research at the same rates as men, but not getting the top jobs. What are these top jobs, and why are women still excluded from them?
The most desirable positions are in academic institutions where there's a cutting edge research component and lively inquiry. When we look at the pools of applicants, women are very poorly represented. Students say that it looks too hard and too daunting. There's underrepresentation and women are concerned about family issues and there's no real support for this. The good news is that we're aware of what's happening, and intuitions are trying to correct the issues that are turning away really talented women scientists in this career. It's not that women can't do this work; something is putting them off, and it's a combination of things not unique to the sciences.
There are sometimes cumulative negative cues - subtle signals that women receive - that are not huge by themselves but add up to a discouraging picture of the profession that they want to go into. They see it as hostile to family life - that they will be taken as not serious about their profession. We all recognize this and work hard not to create a negative environment.

Top 10 Interview Blunders

What shouldn't you do when interviewing? Here are a selection of blunders, mistakes and errors a candidate for employment can make. Spend time preparing to interview so these don't happen to you!

Top 10 Interview Blunders

1. Don't Prepare
Not being able to answer the question "What do you know about this company?" might just end your quest for employment, at least with this employer. Background information including company history, locations, divisions, and a mission statement are available in an "About Us" section on most company web sites. Review it ahead of time, then print it out and read it over just before your interview to refresh your memory.
2. Dress Inappropriately
Dressing inappropriately can work both ways. You will certainly want to wear a suit if you are interviewing for professional position. When interviewing for a summer job at your local theme park or as a lifeguard, for example, dress accordingly in neat and casual attire. If you aren't sure what to wear, visit the organization and watch employees coming in and out of the office to see what they are wearing.
3. Poor Communication Skills
It's important to communicate well with everyone you meet in your search for employment. It is, however, most important to positively connect with the person who might hire you. Shake hands, make eye contact, exude confidence, engage the person you are speaking with, and you will let the interviewer know that you are an excellent candidate for this position - before you even answer an interview question.
4. Too Much Communication
Believe it or not, a recent candidate for employment, who, by the way, didn't get the job, didn't hesitate to answer his cell phone when it rang during an interview. Leave the phone behind or at least turn it off before you enter the building. Same goes for coffee, food and anything else other than you, your resume, your job application, and your list of references. They don't belong at an interview.
5. Talk Too Much
There is nothing much worse than interviewing someone who goes on and on and on... The interviewer really doesn't need to know your whole life story. Keep your answers succinct, to-the-point and focused and don't ramble - simply answer the question.
6. Don't Talk Enough
It's really hard to communicate with someone who answers a question with a word or two. I remember a couple of interviews where I felt like I was pulling teeth to get any answers from the candidate. It wasn't pleasant. So, even though you shouldn't talk too much, you do want to be responsive and fully answer the question as best you can.
7. Fuzzy Facts
Even if you have submitted a resume when you applied for the job, you may also be asked to fill out a job application. Make sure you know the information you will need to complete an application including dates of prior employment, graduation dates, and employer contact information.
8. Give the Wrong Answer
Make sure you listen to the question and take a moment to gather your thoughts before you respond. Like the following candidate, you'll knock yourself out of contention if you give the wrong answer.
The interviewer had completely described a sales and marketing position to the candidate. She emphasized that cold calling and prospecting were the most important skills and experiences needed for the position. The candidate responded to the question about what she did or didn't like to do in sales, with these words: "I hate to do cold calling and prospecting, and I'm not good at it." That response ensured that she wouldn't get the job!
9. Badmouthing Past Employers
Your last boss was an idiot? Everyone in the company was a jerk? You hated your job and couldn't wait to leave? Even if it's true don't say so. I cringed when I heard someone ranting and raving about the last company she worked for. That company happened to be our largest customer and, of course, I wasn't going to hire someone who felt that way about the company and everyone who worked there.
It's sometimes a smaller world than you think and you don't know who your interviewer might know, including that boss who is an idiot... You also don't want the interviewer to think that you might speak that way about his or her company if you leave on terms that aren't the best.
10. Forget to Follow Up
Afraid you didn't make the best impression? Are you sure that you aced the interviewed? Either way, be sure to follow up with a thank you note reiterating your interest in the position and the company.
Finally, even if you do flub the interview, don't take it to heart. I don't think there is anyone hasn't blown an interview or two. If it happens, look at it like it just wasn't meant to be, learn from your mistakes and move on to the next opportunity.
